Recently, a close family relative had two stents put in during a heart catheterization procedure in a Denver area hospital. The procedure went well and he is breathing much easier without the heaviness in his chest which is great! Next come all of the lifestyle choices that should be made to prevent further heart damage and to improve and expand his quality of life. This is where the hard work comes for the patient and family members.

If you were a smoker, you will be strongly encouraged to stop smoking! Consider that meals have consisted primarily of meat and potatoes covered in gravy and now you are being asked to eat primarily fish, fruits and vegetables. You are now expected to exercise three to five times a week in addition to taking new medications to help keep your blood from clotting and perhaps decrease your blood pressure. And most of these changes include your spouse and family members in some way, which means they must make modifications as well. This can be incredibly frustrating, complicated and sometimes cause depression.

Please know that there is help! The new Cardiac Support group at Montrose Memorial Hospital can offer support, education and camaraderie that will help you navigate through this journey. Attending the monthly meetings will help both the patient and their family recover stronger and realize that you are not alone. You can learn from the professionals and also from people just like you who have lived through a heart attack or heart event. The group is led by Judy Collins who is a Cardiovascular Nurse Practitioner and Board Certified Clinical Lipid Specialist. She invites physicians, dietitians, exercise specialists, and other professionals to lead the discussions and answer questions each month. The group meets on the 4th Wednesday of each month from 5:30 – 6:30 p.m. in Conference Room B at Montrose Memorial Hospital. The meeting is open to anyone interested in heart health and there is no fee and no need to pre-register.

If you are interested, I encourage you to stop by. We’ve received very positive comments from the 18-20 people who have attended. For questions or more information please call 252.1020.
