HOSPITAL HAPPENINGS: April 2017

Caring for Our Communities

As a regional health system, Montrose Memorial Hospital serves Montrose, San Miguel, Ouray, Gunnison, Delta, Hinsdale and San Juan counties. Wherever you live, our goal is to give you the best care possible. The recent awards we’ve received—including being named in the Top 100 Rural Community Hospitals in the nation two years in a row— are the culmination of everything we do towards that end. But our care for our communities extends beyond patient care.

We promote area support groups on our website by providing up to date information on who runs them, when they meet, and how to contact the support group’s leaders if there are any questions. You can find this page in the ‘Patient & Visitor’ tab at the top of MontroseHospital.com. These groups are free for anyone to attend and provide a great benefit to the wellbeing of the people in our communities. For instance, we recently added information for a support group whose purpose is to provide support for family caregivers. What a great resource!

Our website front page also features a simulated ‘ticker’ to demonstrate the community benefit dollars we contribute to ensure the people in our region have their important needs met. As of this writing, the ticker is already over $2,000,000 dollars for 2017!

Late last year we introduced our new Community Health Worker, Cassandra Goddard. Cassandra applied for the new position because of her passion for seeing her community achieve better health. It’s a mission very personal for Cassandra: her aunt died at age 32 from breast cancer. In addition, Cassandra found out at an appointment that she had precancerous cells on her cervix. Knowing that early detection is key to winning the battles of health, Cassandra helps women in our area receive the screenings they need and has various methods available to her to help break down the common barriers many women face in getting their screenings. Recently, a patient comment read the following:

“Cassandra helped me schedule my mammogram. She is absolutely wonderful! I can’t say enough about her. She is helpful and goes above and beyond. She is caring and compassionate and her kindness makes hard situations so much better.”

The feedback from these initiatives has been wonderful. We are happy to serve the important needs of our communities!
